Scientific Research
If you ask me when my path in research truly began, I cannot answer with precision. There was no single, exact moment, no one day that marked a conscious and definitive choice. It was rather a quiet calling, a slow unfolding, driven by an inner need: the need to understand the world, to structure it, to make it more coherent and freer, at least in my own mind.
In Romania of the 1970s, in a modest, limited, and often rigid technological landscape, I discovered for the first time the secret fascination of computers. It was not only their astonishing power to execute commands that attracted me, but the possibility — still vague, yet deeply seductive — of creating living structures within them, worlds of their own, ordered by rules more rigorous than those of immediate reality.
I began my career with this simple and profound desire: to build constructs that would not be prisoners of machines, just as human beings should not be prisoners of the circumstances into which destiny or ignorance has pushed them.
My attempts to master as fully as possible the complexity of software and to infuse reasoning into inanimate systems were not, for me, merely professional stages. They were forms of the same quest: the search for a deeper freedom, the search for an order hidden in chaos, the search for an intelligence meant to serve life, not replace it.
This journey, spanning more than five decades, has borne many names: portability, software engineering, artificial intelligence, medical informatics, digital ecosystems, or digital twins.
But beyond labels and transient technologies, it has always been the same journey: the journey toward a world in which thought, life, and technology may coexist in harmony.
I write these lines now, looking back over this journey, not as a cold balance sheet, but as a living story that does not end with me. A story about what I sought, what I understood, and above all about what I became in the course of my search.
My research activity extended over several decades and covered different areas of computer science, from theoretical foundations to interdisciplinary applications. This section is organized by research domains and follows the evolution of ideas, methods, and results independently of the biographical framework in which they emerged.
The purpose of this presentation is to offer a coherent view of the themes addressed, the contributions made, and the links among them, without entering here into memoir-like detail. The personal and institutional context is treated separately in the Memoirs section.

Foundations: formal methods and systems, programming languages, compilers
My research activity began in the area of the foundations of computer science, with an emphasis on programming languages, compilation techniques, and formal methods for describing semantics and translation processes. These concerns laid the groundwork for my later work in software engineering.
Software Engineering
A central part of my research was devoted to the systematic design of software products, the modeling of the development process, and tool integration. Concepts such as interform, process models, and software architectures formed the core of this activity.

Artificial Intelligence
My interest in artificial intelligence appeared early and returned periodically, in different forms, throughout my career. This section brings together reflections, applications, and contributions related to knowledge models, intelligent systems, and the evolution of the field.
Medical Informatics
At a later stage, my research expanded into medical informatics and eHealth systems, with an emphasis on electronic health record architectures, digital ecosystems, and digital twins of health. Concepts such as health digital state and Smart EHR are presented here in their conceptual and technological framework.
Projects
Some directions of my activity are better understood through the projects in which ideas took shape: from early systems and tools, to software development environments, and later to medical informatics and digital health projects. In this section, the emphasis falls on context, objectives, and results.
