This section brings together the travel episodes from my memoirs. They are not simple travel notes, but pages in which places are connected with people, encounters, family, culture and different stages of life. Some journeys belong to my professional maturity, others to later family reunions or to moments of personal reflection.
- The journeys are arranged chronologically, according to the year in which they took place.
- A journey may belong both to a stage of life and to this cross-cutting path.
- As other episodes are reconstructed, they will be added here without overloading the general memoirs index.
1990–1999
- 👉 New York – June 1992 – a journey in which two strands of my life came together: Alti’s twelfth birthday, celebrated with his godparents, Anca and Tibi, and the completion of the editorial process for Integrating Tools for Software Development, through my visit to Prentice Hall in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
2000–2009
- 👉 From Brest to Paris – January 2005 – a journey through northern France, from Brest and Pointe Saint-Mathieu to Mont Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo and Paris, connected with a stage of my professional maturity.
- 👉 New York – October 2005 – a journey prompted by Anca’s eightieth birthday, celebrated at Rockefeller Center and then within the family, followed by my return to the Metropolitan Museum, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Times Square, Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle.

👉
Crete – IHIC 2008, between the sea and Knossos
– a journey for the 9th International HL7 Interoperability Conference, held at Aldemar Knossos Royal
in Anissaras, where I presented two papers on the Virtual Healthcare Record, together with my impressions
of the sea, Hersonissos, Heraklion and the Minoan palace.
Dedicated subpage: Knossos – between myth, archaeology and reconstruction.
2010–2019
- 👉 Barcelona – February 2013 – a journey prompted by my participation in HEALTHINF 2013, where I presented the paper “Paradigm Shifts in Health Informatics,” and by my encounter with Barcelona: La Rambla, the port, Montjuïc, Fundació Joan Miró, Sagrada Família and the historic centre.

New York and Florida – October–November 2015
– a family journey centered on Anca’s ninetieth birthday, including New York,
the Metropolitan Opera, meetings with former students, Florida, Virginia Zeani and Key West.

👉
Belgium – October–November 2017
– a journey that began as a surprise planned for my son, who was living in Brussels, but which,
because of his absence, became a solitary exploration of Brussels, Antwerp and Bruges:
Grand-Place, the Royal Museums, La Monnaie, Antwerp Cathedral, Grote Markt, the canals and the museums of Bruges.
Subpages: Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges.
This section will remain open. Other journeys can be added under the appropriate periods without changing the general structure of the memoirs.
Thematic links
Some journeys are best read together with other sections of the memoirs. The 1992 journey to New York is connected both with the episode “America Deferred” and with the story of writing and publishing Integrating Tools for Software Development. The journey to Crete is connected with my research on virtual health records, HL7 interoperability and my participation in IHIC 2008. The Barcelona trip is linked to my research in health informatics and my participation in HEALTHINF 2013. The journeys to New York in 2005 and 2015 are connected with the family account of Anca and Tibi, while the journey through northern France belongs to the period of professional and emotional maturity. The 2017 journey to Belgium is linked to my son's presence in Brussels and, through the unexpected change in the original plan, to the way in which a missed family visit turned into a cultural exploration of three cities.
